The "G" was to denote for government use. Like Official stamps.

Hi Robert

In answering your question, yes, only government officials, the military, R.C.M.P.(and other policing entities), provincial governments etc had use of these and the regular public generally did not have access to these.

Yes it is. There are 2 overprint varieties for this stamp. Thick "G" (O38) and thin "G" (O38a). Robert's stamp is #O38. Both varieties have the same MNH catalog value in 2011 Scott -- $5.

I don't know what Canadian laws are like on the subject, but here in the US you can own all of the Official Mail Stamps (both mint and used) that you'd like. The government only gets into the picture if you decide to USE an Official Mail Stamp on anything other than government correspondence (in the U.S., the "penalty for private use" is $300). I imagine it's along those same lines in Canada. You can collect them to your heart's content, just don't try to use them on outgoing mail or you may find yourself in legal trouble.

There are additional overprint flaws listed in Unitrade. However, your "G" looks normal.

Since the usual catalogues are copyrighted most of this kind of information will not show up in one place on the net.

You really need a Unitrade Canada specialized catalogue (2012 shipping soon).
http://www.adminware.ca/admphil.htm for errata and updates.

However, even this catalogue does not list all the varieties of errors and so called errors (printing anomalies, oddities, freaks) that occur.

Darnell used to have an Canada EFO catalogue (2005) but I am not sure if it still exists or a new version has been printed.

Other than those, ebay lists errors or EFOs or varieties. The pricing is sometimes dependent upon the demand for such an error as not all collectors collect them, or if they do perhaps only certain types (misperfs for example) or the most glaringly obvious ones like missing colours etc ($5.00 Missing Moose).

You need sharp eyes and hopefully a good scanner to really study these printing anomalies.

I (and others) have been saving pictures now and then off of ebay (I do this) of Canada errors as either catalogue mentioned above do not at times have good pictures of certain errors (this is improving).

Scott (and Unitrade) only list the constant errors or varieties (those that occur on every pane or plate consistently over and over. They do not have the time or room to list all possible varieties of every stamp.

Here are a couple of my O38 stamps showing the difference between the O38 and the O38a "Flying G" variations.

Here is the O38

This is the O38a. Note the Thinning of the G in the lower left of it.

This also occurred with O39 (Kayak) and O45 (Paper Industry).

I think there was another topic on scanners. This is the built in scanner in my HP Photosmart B210a printer. It's slow at 1200 dpi (i reduced these to something that would fit in the post) but does nice work.

Dave.

[Edit]

Now that's interesting... I haven't scanned this stamp at high resolution before. I've never noticed the little tiny "1953" in the lower right corner of the stamps.
