Keep in mind that quite a few older collectors do not use the internet, or make very limited use of the internet. So you can expect the results to be skewed toward younger age.

I would agree, that in the US, it is very likely that the majority of active collectors are over 40. Internationally, this may not be the case -- especially in Asia.

I started collecting when I was in my mid-20s, well before commercialization of the internet, and felt a little out of place among the more mature members of the local stamp club. That and the responsibilities of starting a family led to my fairly long hiatus from active collecting.

In a few months I'll be able to withdraw from my 401k without having to pay the 10% tax penalty (for our non-US members, that magic age is 59 and 1/2).

I maybe in my early 50's today, but I was first collecting stamps as an 8-year-old through my mid-teens. I lost interest in it for awhile but came back to it in my mid-20's and have been collecting ever since.

I've found it to be a nice and relaxing hobby. In fact, my early interest in stamps as a school student helped me through several portions of US and World history as I could relate back to my stamps for many of the historical characters taught to us in school.

Unfortunately, with the recent USPS announcement that living persons will be allowed to appear on future stamp issues, I'm not sure today's school-age children will learn as much from modern stamps if the focus moves away from historical figures, places and events.

Almost 68. Aaaah - the golden years! I have the years, now where is the gold? I started collecting around 1952 when my grandfather gave me some of his cheaper duplicates (most still are).

41. Taking into consideration our social media, it comes as no surprise that there are so many in the 40-50 year old range on SCF.

Ask the same question about the local clubs, and I think you will get a different answer. Of the 20-30 people who regularly meet at my club, I can think of 3 people under the age of 60. Most are well past that, even.

This - In fact, I still know who people are and what they've done only because I collected stamps as a kid

I'm 40. I started collecting when I was 6. Became a parttime collector once I hit the teenage years. Quit collecting totally when I joined the military. Started back again in 1995 or so and have been collecting fulltime/part time since then.
