Hi, me again-

Ok so I have a ton of stamps from china, 1930s - 1950s.
I would say 2/3rds of them are overprinted, and I have found a handful that have a double ovp. Im having a hard time identifying many of these, especially the "doubles." Am I looking in the wrong place in the scott? Who knew stamp collecting was so complex? Not I.
It seems I should have paid better attention in world history....

....and learned chinese!....

I can't help with the stamps but terminology wise I think these are multiple overprints.
Double overprints tend to suggest the same overprint multiple times.

Thanks for the info.... that does make more sense.
This is all pretty new to me.

I believe they are China # 9N85 ($50 on 1c) and 9N91 ($1000 on 1c)

having a hard time finding the green ovp, or how both affect the value.....

Thanks everyone for all the help!!

I don't know the exact locations, but I think this is a pre Communist China stamp (1941 SC#450) with a regional overprint, overprinted again later on for use in the People's Republic (post 1949 Communist China).
Out local China experts can translate the overprints.

edit - no, I take that back. I think black surcharge (change of denomination) over green regional over print, probably 1946-47.

I can't give you Scott numbers, but these surcharges in Chinese National Currency were made on 17 September 1945. The first is a 15 cent surcharge; the second is a $5 surcharge.

The overprints and surcharges are a complex study.

I honestly believe that not all of these stamps from China have been tabulated and there are so many types. I think that SG Catalogue delves into these a little more, but, they too are not complete.

I do not have a copy of the Yany Catalgue, or any other one for China for that matter, but wonder if they are more complete??

Like you JMaplewood, I have literally hundreds and possibly a couple of thousand of these and, there are some in my collection that I cannot find as well. You are not alone.

I have a hard enough time telling the stamps apart, I can see this is pretty complex. Im sure I'll have more questions but for now I think I'll move on to another part of the collection...

Close, but not quite. As Tony noted, the green surcharges are denominated in CNC (1945). The green surcharge was made after the black surcharge.

In the Scott catalog, the stamps should be China(ROC) #617 and #621, both issued in 1945.

Of course you're right, khj. I can only plead that it was well after midnight our time when I wrote that ... My fingers get much fatter as the night wears on
