Hello fellow SCF members:

I had this bright Ideato count how many stamps I would need to go thru the year 1952 and the story goes like this: Once upon a time ....................

In another thread concerning Scott International Albums and printing your own pages, I got the bug to get back into Worldwide collecting, limiting my collection thru 1952. I chose this year for several reasons, it was a good cutoff for British stamps, with 1952 being the end of GVIs rein. It would also allow me to get some post WWII issues, but limit the amount of wallpaper CTOs. In trying to get a grip on actually how many stamps I would need, I decided to go through the Scott Catalogs (2006 ed.) and count the main Scott #'s in the categories. To bring everyone up to date reading this new thread, I copied the listing from the old post for Vols. 1,2 &3 which appear below the new information for volume IV.

2006 Vols I thru IV (letters A-O)

1) 311 Stamp issuing entities

2) 58070 stamps thru 1940

3) 22149 Stamps 1941-1952 (38% of the 1840-1940 issues)

******************************************************************

I went thru my 2006 Vol. #1 Scott catalog (letters A&B), listing the countries with their stamps issued up thru 1940 and then those issued from 1941-1952. I just used the major Scott #'s and here's what I got:

1) 71 stamp issuing entities for one or both of the time periods

2) 12760 stamps issued for 1840-1940

3) 3977 stamps issued 1941-1952 or 31% of the 1840-1940 issues

******************************************************************
I finished going thru vol #2 (letter "F") listing the countries with their stamps issued up thru 1940 and then those issued from 1941-1952. I just used the major Scott #'s and here's what I got:

1) 144 stamp issuing entities for one or both of the time periods

2) 27703 stamps issued for 1840-1940

3) 12203 stamps issued 1941-1952 or 44% of the 1840-1940 issues, versus 31% for the A-B letters (vol. 1). The killer were the China(s) which added 3300 stamps, mostly BOB. France added 500, Ecuador 350, Egypt 250, Czech 350. These six countries make up 40% of the post 1940 stamps so far.

********************************************************************
I finished going thru vol #3 (letters "G-I") listing the countries with their stamps issued up thru 1940 and then those issued from 1941-1952. I just used the major Scott #'s and here's what I got:

1) 217 stamp issuing entities for one or both of the time periods. There is acyually more as I didn't list the separate Chinese regions, Indian States or Italian islands.

2) 42569 stamps issued for 1840-1940

3) 17054 stamps issued 1941-1952 or 40% of the 1840-1940 issues, versus 31% for the A-B letters (vol. 1) and 44% for the letters A-F (vol. 1&2).

Hopefully I'll finish going through the last two volumes over the weekend. Will keep all posted.
