Hi all,
Now ill start off by saying that I have zero knowledge of stamps and stamp collections (im more of a militaria guy) but I inherited this fairly large Canadian stamp collection recently and im looking for some info on the stamps.
All are Canadian, and im assuming he placed them oldest first down to more modern ones. There are quite a few stamps here so I only glossed over some of the pages as opposed to getting clear detailed shots of each one individually, many are duplicates. Im looking for some details on these, rarity, value ,collecting interest ect. Let me know if you need some nice clear close ups of individual stamps. Thanks very much.

Hi,
I am NOT an expert on Canadian stamps, but am pretty familiar with them. What you have here is a nice collection that spans many decades, but has minimal monetary value. That is not a put down, for it is a really good collection.

I would urge you to pick up a Canada stamp album, and pick the best examples of each stamp and set them up in the album. I think you would really enjoy it once you got started, and would be a wonderful testament to the individual from which they came.

They look pretty common but there is a Canada forum that would be even better for this discussion.

Looks like a fair example of the early 20th century lower denomination used stamps.
A few pre-20th century, also used.
Some airmail stamps also some air mail officials and other officials.
You've got pre-canceled and perfin stamps.
Can't see if you have any overprint perfin stamps.
Don't know if this is all the stamps you have.

etc etc. Hopefully you're getting the picture. It is impossible to give you a true value of what you have because there is no way to know for sure by looking at the pictures.

Like Mobileman said, get a catalog or pick out a few at a time and head for the library.
Were you left any equipment ie. tongs, jewelers loop or magnifier of any kind. Also you need a perforation gauge.
If you are going to handle these stamps please get some tongs. Many of your stamps are over 100 yrs old. I cringe when I see pics of people holding stamps between there fingers for the photo.

Canadian collector here, and like the other folks have mentioned, these are pretty much all very common items in used condition, so very little in the way of value. You can buy lots like this on ebay for around $20 - $30. As you mentioned, the first page contains the oldest stamps, but again nothing rare or hard to find and the queens are not very well centered and one appears to have some discoloration of some kind top left (second photo, top row second from left - yellow queen). The two #85 stamps (or could be an 85 and 86) are the first Christmas stamps ever made, first pic third row towards the right with the world map. Those have a catalog value of around $6 each but sell for much less on the actual market, maybe 20% of that or less.

This is a GREAT starter collection for someone looking to get their feet wet in Canadian stamps, but I don't see anything that will fetch any kind of significant dollar value or are rare. Un-used stamps with very fine centering and no faults are generally the only stamps that really fetch a premium price with a handful of exceptions.

Hope this helps,
Dan

A quick scan and the most valuable stamp may be the $1 Destroyer. It is not well centered, but Catalog value is ~$50. If there are no faults, it might fetch $10...however,

as a militaria collector, maybe you can find a way to mesh the two hobbies. This is a good start on the "War Issue" stamps (including the perforated OHMS) of Canada.

Hello bmackay, welcome to Stamp Community!

The cancels or postmarks are collectible and some of the nicer ones you have there (worth$1 -$2 or more, depending on the whole condition of the stamp and the clarity and readability of the cancel are the CALGARY on the 5c blue Ottawa, the ~~BONNET / MAN. on the 3c purple King George VI, the numbered (POCON cancels) on the $1 and I think $2 stamps.

Some other ones also, but the stamps being stuck in to the manila stock pages makes it hard to see everything clearly.

The better a buyer or collector can see what is offered (if you decide to do that at any time) the better chance of selling them. Also the better described, the better.

CDS (Circular Date Stamp) SON (Socked On the Nose) cancellations are collectible, especially on smaller sized stamps where they are very difficult to find well centered.

Overall, a good collection, accumulation, wih mostly fine to very fine well centered stamps. As mentioned the catalogue values will give you an idea of their alue but the market selling value is less. Considerably less with less well-centered stamps and smudgey cancels, or disurbed gum on Mint (post Office fresh) stamps.

If you decide to stick around here and continue with your stamps interest, and want to sell any of the cancels or postmarks (oh yes, a rolelr TORONTO ON cancel there also) then please remeber my name.

Not allowed to buy / sell at this time yet.

Also some of the Kng George VI (6th) KGVI War Tax (1Tc) stamps can be worth $5-$10 depending on whether good condition and Die I or Die II, bothe Carmine red or brown. You have to zoom in on the lines below the 1Tc to tell the difference.
