Scott Catalog does not have much information about this airmail issue:

Why was it issued?
What is the design? A coat of arms?
Given such a simple design, are there forgeries?
Any ideas about why the 3.50a has a different type face?

Just wondering because the album page looks sparse with so little text.

Thanks!

I can't add much but they were issued without gum on 6th August 1947 and were printed by Imprensa Nacional de Luanda.

"CTT" are the initials of the postal service at the time, "Correios, Telégrafos e Telefones" (the same as in Portugal) so maybe this was their logo or it's a logo for their airmail services.

The rough shield in the middle shows the arms of Portuguese West Africa (Angola) although you can't see much of the elephant or zebra on the right-hand side.

nigelc,

Thank you, you've more than doubled what I know about this issue.

Is this information in Gibbon's?
It seems to me that they always have just a bit more detail than Scott.

I have a 1986 Part 1 British Commonwealth catalogue that steered me to some Brit. P.A.s in Eastern Arabia (Oman) that are not listed in Scott.
Back when the cataloge was new, a new dealer was closing out a retired dealer's stock and I found a 41a raised 2, and a #57a wide surcharge. He had everything marked down to about 20% of Scott, so these were bargains. I can't imagine what percent of catalog he paid the retired dealer.

But, back to the Angola airmails.
I agree with your guess that it's the airmail logo. I was looking at the Portugal coat of arms, but as you say, it looks like Portuguese West Africa.
