A red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is depicted on this 2013 computer-vended stamp from Ireland's 4th series of "Irish animals and marine life". This animal is the largest of the "true fox" (Canidae) family. From Wikipedia. "(It is) one of the most widely distributed members of the order Carnivora, being present across the entire Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to North Africa, North America, and Eurasia." In North America, where it shares a range with the smaller gray fox, its numbers have increased, while the gray fox's numbers have declined. The red fox has now spread to Australia, where it threatens native birds and animals. Worldwide, there are 45 identified subspecies of the very adaptable red fox. |
