Hi guys
Here is another one of my stupid questions.
If a guy had a stamp that had a error/flaw/variety, how would some one inform Linn, Scott, Unitrade, etc. that they had some thing that could be added to their catalogs...???
Because I would image all the images I see in catalogs came from some where...!!

First, you would need a HIGH resolution scan of the stamp. If possible, I would post it on Flickr, ImageShack, or some place like that so you can email the link to other people. It's better to email the LINK because some people don't enjoy receiving large unsolicited images that can choke an email inbox. Then you should post the link here for all your friends to see Email the link to the editor at Linn's -- he'll get it to the right person for Linn's and/or Scott (both owned by Amos Press). KirkS |

The editor of Unitrade Canada catalogue is Robin Harris and his web site is at the Adminware company site here: http://www.adminware.ca/admphil.htmwhere his email is at the top of that page. Unitrade uses Scott catalogue numbers under agreement with Scott. As far as I know the only varieties listed in Unitrade or Scott are constant varieties. These are ones that occur constantly on every example of a plate printed and in the same position on that plate (row, column). You would have to lat him (Unitrade and Scott) know which position (row number, column number) the stamp is in that has your variety occurring, most likely, so they could verify your data when looking at a similar stamp on other panes or sheets. Non-constant varieties are collectible and are listed in Darnell EFO catalogue and on ebay and elsewhere as they are interesting and fascinating to some degree for some people, me included. It used to be that you had to send your stamp in to the catalogue people so they could examine it but perhaps the internet has speeded up that process? |

Each country in Scott seems to be written by a different person. I once thought I had found an unlisted Macao colour shade variety and was in touch with the guy who writes the Macao section. It took a couple of days to receive a reply, but it all went smoothly enough. |

Ah yes, I forgot colour varieties. But still it would have to be more than just one example, a one off,. Others would have to be able to verify your suggestion with other known examples. |

Yikes gentlemen I just sent Linn a note to show a link to imageshack, but I think I did 2 things wrong. 1 - The link I gave them was below, does not show my stamp http://profile.imageshack.us/user/oliver1948/2 - What if it is one of a kind mistake/flaw, then they will not even look at it. Is this correct...??? If so, I will go into imageshack and delete everything. |

Just resend your email (name it slightly different to differentiate it from the first) and put the correct link in that goes to your pic.
Still worth a try even if they don't accept it. I would love to see their response please, either way, to help us and others in submitting possible corrections and new finds. |

Puzzler I jumped in too quickly with imageshack and screwed it all up....I went back in and deleted the images, but I am reluctant to try again...I will just post pictures like normal in a post rather then try using imageshack again....At least I don't screw that up.
As for Linn not getting my correct link, I will just not bother sending any more emails to them.
As KirkS said, I should not send them a big attachment, because they might not like that. |

Wert: You skipped the step where I said, "post it here for your friends to see" We would have discovered the broken link and told you . Seriously, don't fret over a mistake -- I've emailed Linn's before with questions and they're always very nice and helpful. I'm sure they understand Internet mishaps. KirkS |

Wert, to be honest the tiny ink smudge is nothing, not worth bothering Professionals about, sorry. |

I agree with Finch, but I would expound a bit... There are several folks here who examine every stamp with high magnification and really enjoy the details of every design. Flyspeckers one and all, I guess Personally, I do not examine my stamps to that degree. On the other hand, one of my favorite threads here is "Hidden Dates on Canadian Stamps." Lots of great details and fun with modern Canada. But here, in my opinion, is the bottom line.... Every modern stamp has oddities in the printing -- color shifts, blurs, smudges, you name it. And it seems very unlikely to me that any of them will ever get a footnote in a catalog. I know exceptions can be found in Unitrade, but they seem few and far between. So, I think most folks who are into the details are doing it for the pure joy of doing it -- not in the hope of a catalog listing. Of course, for me this means that I can love the $10 Blue Whale, but I'll never be famous for finding one with an extra fin KirkS |
