In another thread the idea of using the older Provincial stamps for mailing today within Canada was raised.

Here is a cover I received in December 2008:

The postage includes:

* 2 x 1c Macdonald (Canada 586as) [boring]
* 2 x 13c Charlottetown (Canada 224)
* 3c Queen Elizabeth (Newfoundland 255)
* 4c Queen Victoria (Prince Edward Island 14)
* 6c Queen Victoria (Prince Edward Island 15)
* 12c Queen Victoria (Prince Edward Island 16)

The PEI stamps catalogue prices are more for used than mint. Of course, that would be "used in period", not 136 years later!

Interesting cover alright.

I also like the Hollywood (?), Calgary R.P.O. (Retail Postal Outlet) cancellation too.

Are those stamps all PEI related? Didn't the confederation meeting happen in Charlottetown? Is there a theme there?

I have seen Newfoundland stamps on modern covers, but never Prince Edward Island stamps before!

Puzzler I think you are right. With the exception of the Queen Elizabeth Newfie, all the others are related to the 1864 Charlottetown Conference. Certainly Sir John A. was there.
Studystamps, of you could send me a high rez scan of that cover I'd appreciate it. It was at my last club meeting that that topic came up. Love to show it to them.

edit- My guess is that the postmark is Hawkwood RPO. Hawkwood is a community in Calgary.

Found this about Queen Elizabeth on Wikipedia under Royal tours of Canada:

Quote:
Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother

The Queen Mother went to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island to celebrate Canada's centennial in 1967.

Along the similar line,I am collecting covers that have Newfoundland stamps on them but are postmarked elsewhere in Canada-maybe I can get enough for a small exhibit?

Here are some of what I have.

Thanks for pointing that out jamesw

I couldn't make out the full name.

This is only the 2nd or third time I have seen stamps from PEI used but not uncommon for Newfoundland.

Also, not knocking down the cover at all, I am wondering if the sender used defective stamps purely as postage because they would have lost their philatelic value in that condition?? (Just a guess)

I think rather that he used PEI stamps because he wanted to make a confederation-themed cover.

Queen Victoria was the Queen at confederation, Prince Edward was her father, confederation happened in Prince Edward Island as per the gathering stamp, Sir John A. was there then and Queen Elizabeth (as the Queen mother) visited on the 100 year anniversary of confederation.

A comment not as much related to stamps as to envelopes: I'm a bit curious about the 3rd cover scanned by plsllvn (Newfoundland Air Mail). I don't recall ever seeing blue and red half-circles surrounding an envelope to indicate air mail. Could that have been unique to Canada?

Since the 4th cover scanned (with red and blue angled squares) are the generally accepted type of air mail envelope, I wonder if it was an intentional change, as I recall reading about the person who copyrighted the air mail envelope back in its day, and perhaps an independent envelope company sought to use a different style so as to avoid any copyright infringement.

Anyone know for sure?

I am not sure. Would the sender, the stamp company, have privately printed the envelopes?
