I remember an SCF link that provided information regarding the presence of a post office in Toronto's Union Station and images of its respective postmark. Were there other such train station post offices in the country? It seems logical that if there is or was that they would only have been in the largest centres. If they existed I would be interested and would much appreciate seeing some of the respective postmarks. Thanking you in advance I remain ....

TPG Shaw's "Handbook & Catalogue of Canadian Transportation Postmarks" lists 45 different entries under the Depots heading. The postmark from Union Station in Toronto exists in a few different forms - "Union Rwy. Station, Toronto", "Union St'n Toronto", etc. (There is also a Union Station in St. John, NB - partial postmarks might be misleading).

This book deals mostly with RPO postmarks (post offices on a train), but it also includes these depot postmarks and there's also a chapter for Railroads & Steamer Routes - sometimes you come across a postmark that you can't find in the book until you go to the back and find that there's been a boat involved in there somewhere ....

Canada issued a stamp in 1946 showing one of these train ferries.

Ryan: thanks for the information and that great image of Canada Scott#273. Images from the 1946 Peace Issue are some of my favourites.

For those expectantly waiting for anyone to provide postmarks from post offices that were located in railway stations in Canada here, at least, is a list of railway post offices that have existed courtesy of Fred Jarrett's book Stamps of British North America (p577) published by Quarterman Publications (Lawrence, Massachusetts, 1929; 1975):

Found one on the web for the Grand Trunk Railway Station in Hamilton cancelled august 25, 1899:

The cover and stamp that it is tied to, as well as other interesting postal history items, can be seen at the following site:

You want info on Canadian RPOs? (Railway Post Offices)

The definitive source is the brain trust of collectors who are members of the BNAPS RPO Study Group (British North America Philatelic Society)

Their web site is at: http://www.bnaps.org/studygroups/rpo/rpo1.htm
