To give a bit more background on the above stamp. It was issued to mark the centenary of the UPU. The route was from Karesuando to Kummavuopio, the northernmost farm in Sweden, 270km north of the Arctic circle. 180km of the route is on the Finnish side of the border, with just 30km on the Swedish side. 22 homes are serviced on the route. The photo for the stamp design was taken by Borje Runnberg, and shows Postman Martin Niva, whose father travelled the route before him. In the background is one of the many river crossings, and an old timber sauna. Martin travelled the route twice weekly through summer and winter, on foot and by boat in the winter, and on skis and occasionally bike in the winter. |

While these are not stamps, they are definitely related. My grandfather was a special delivery mailman in Gadsen, Alabama in the early 1930's. Here's the badge from his hat: And this is his name badge: Unfortunately, I never knew him as he died in the early 1940's long before I was born. |

Here's one I stumble upon this morning (while procrastinating from doing anything productive). I thought this Swiss bus stamp was interesting in itself. When I looked it up in Scott's, I found it is a Mobile Post Office. Issued in 1937 (redrawn and reissued in 1946) this stamp was sold exclusively by the traveling post office. It exists on two kinds of granite paper, black and red fibres or blue and red (this one has black and red). Who knew? |
