The Meuse is a major European river, rising in France and flowing through Belgium and the Netherlands before draining into the North Sea. It has a total length of 925 km (575 mi). The Meuse is considered to be the oldest river in the world. Here is an image of a stamp depicting sailboats and picnic grounds in France's Meuse district, designed and engraved by Jacques Jubert, and issued by France on May 30, 1987, Scott No. 2032, Y&T No. 2466.

As a degreed geologist, I would never have guessed that ... went and looked it up and indeed, in the world of river age estimation (obviously a somewhat inexact science), the experts have picked the Meuse as the eldest.

clifhiker - You're welcome! For me, learning new stuff is one of the best parts of stamp collecting.

Here is an image of a stamp depicting a sailboat, designed by Claude Robin, engraved by Eugène Lacaque, and issued for use in Afars and Issas on October 9, 1970, Scott No. 346.

Here is an image of an airmail stamp depicting views of the custom-built schooner Antarctica, which was used by French polar explorer Jean-Louis Étienne's team during "Mission Erebus" in 1995-96, and a map of Antarctica showing Dr. Étienne's route, designed and engraved by Claude Jumelet, and issued for use in French Southern and Antarctic Territories on January 2, 1995, Scott No. C133.

Here is an image of a stamp depicting a native prahu (proa), engraved and printed by Waterlow & Sons, Ltd., and issued for use in North Borneo on November 1, 1956 as one of a set of four stamps commemorating the 75th anniversary of the North Borneo Chartered Company, Scott No. 277.

A zaroug is a traditional type of sailboat used primarily in the Red Sea, on the coast of Yemen and the Hejaz. Here is an image of an airmail stamp depicting zarougs, designed by Claude Robin, engraved by Claude Hertenberger, and issued for use in Somali Coast in 1964, Scott No. C33, plus a photo of a zaroug.
