Just got back from my stamp club's semi annual auction. Managed to procure a few things for the collection, so I thought I'd share.
Here's a cover postmarked Orillia Ontario April 28, 1880 with what looks to be a small queen SC#37c.
The back is postmarked Barrie (which coincidentally is where the auction was) and the destination Collingwood Ontario. All in the same day! Now that's service.

The letter is still inside, but the script is going to take some time to decipher. Addressed to W. (Willie) F. Henderson Esq from Sophie H. Darling.
Ah! Young love (I think)

An upside down stamp? You are probably right.

edit: Well, not young love. They were both 34 when they married on September 4, 1882. He was a widower.

Just for fun, here's a picture postcard (from the web) of the Globe Hotel in Collingwood.
Not the most glam looking place.

Shoot!

I had to miss the auction last night in Barrie too. My wife and I have been under the weather so to speak and she wasn't feeling well enough to travel.

We usually make every auction that the Barrie Stamp Club has but, sad to say, we missed the last two - I am not amused.

Definately will try for their Spring auction.

Too bad you missed it Bujutsu. Not a big crowd, and many deals. More like a sale than an auction.
See you in the spring time.

Hi James

I was in touch with Mike Millar this morning and he informs me that there might be a May auction,as you are most likely aware, although this is not confirmed.

If there is one, we will try our darndest to get to it.

Glad you picked up some bargains.

A little update on this letter. I've started making pages to mount my covers in an album, and while looking at the letter Sophie sent to her Willie, I noticed a stain on the fifth panel and realized...it was a flower!

Sophie sent her love a little bloom a 122 years ago. Now there's a Valentine for you.

The stamp positioning must have a meaning. Here's a postcard explaining it.
