I just won this one on ebay for $4.65 versus a catalogue value of about $50. Nice condition and a blue cancel I had forgotten I bid on it!

Thanks! It replaces this one in my collection. While having sharper perforations, there is a major tear from the left of the crown to the "V". This one is actually the perf 11.75 variety. I am not sure of the new acquisition, will have to wait until it arrives. Prescott C.W. cancel, July 1, 1866, exactly one year before confederation. I will still be keeping this stamp. |

Nice one Beesee. The colors and print are much better on your new one. A very good upgrade. I always have a hard time grading these old stamps since the margins are almost always touching the design. 50$ is for VF. What would you grade this one ?

I agree Coriandre, grading these is difficult.
As you say, Scott in 2012 lists the stamp as $50 for VF, but also says the following:
Very fine examples of the perforated issues between Nos. 11-20 will have perforations touching the design or frameline on at least one side due to the narrow spacing of the stamps on the plates. Stamps with perfs clear of the designs on all four sides are extremely scarce and will command much higher prices.
On mine, the thin frame line is into the perforations at the left, and the perfs are weak on the left. Also a partially pulled perf in the top left.
However, what struck me is the sharpness of the impression and how close to red the colour seems. Of course the colour could be the scan, I will find out when the stamp arrives. Unitrade does list a brick red, it could be that one.
To me it would fall somewhere between VG and Fine. I felt the price was great, nothing really to lose.

I was thinking VG-F ! The fresh look, clear and sharp impression would bring it more towards fine with a buyer over the perforation issue that is common with the old goodies
