Wow. Thanks Rod! Great digging. I was off on the wrong trail…national defense broadcasting.
Now I've learned the difference between shortwave and ham radio. There is something to be learned from stamp collecting every day. |

The first post card: Appears to be in Dr. Ascher Grosser Ganzsachen-Katalog 1928 Band II the first New Zealand post card (#1) issued in 1876. Alternatively #2 issued in 1881 (but I think it is the first one). CV's are low. The second post card: Appears to be in the same catalogue #11. It is part of 16 post card series of war memorial (Boer war?) cards. Issued in 1901. They come on 3 different color cardboard: Yellowish, straw yellow and chamois. CV's are low. |

Working on NZ right now and came across this 2d from 1882, perf 12 x 11 1/2. I didn't see it with my naked eye, but when I checked it under magnification I saw this long scratch that stretches from the top to the bottom, on the right side of the stamp. I don't have any NZ specialized books and I didn't see it mentioned in my SG catalog. Is this a known, cataloged flaw? |

This scratch is recorded in The Postage Stamps of New Zealand, Volume IV, p.28.
It is from Plate 1 (Die I).
It is a continuation of a vertical scratch on the stamp above it (Row 9) on the same sheet. Your example is from Row 10 on the sheet, actual position not stated. A later volume may position it, but I haven't looked.
An impressive variety, one of many not listed by Stanley Gibbons. It isn't listed by Campbell Paterson either.

Plateflaw - Thank you for the great intel. It is much appreciated. I just found another I am curious about. This is a 1d, perf 10 x 11, with a flaw in the upper left. At first glance it looks like it is in the same area as the "chisel flaw" noted in SG, but the flaw area is a bit smaller (maybe due to inking?). Is this an actual chisel flaw, or maybe a minor chisel, or is it something totally different? |
