New Zealand Stamps : Sundry

Here is another, slightly older postcard showing a view of the Rees River as it flows into Lake Wakatipu, South Island. Card has a rubber-stamped sender's address of Auckland. It was sent to Wallasey, Cheshire, England. Postage stamp indicates the card was most likely mailed in 1906-7. Card was printed in Germany

The cancellation appears to be either a supplementary/revenue protection type, or a mute cancel from a postal contractor.

The stamp is the 1 d "Universal, which was heavily used and often reprinted between 1901-6. The plate characteristics seem to indicate that this is a Royle plate printing. It has the dot on the wide right margin, but unlike the earlier "dot plate" printings, it has a shading line on the left side "S" ornament.

In addition, this stamp has a vertical perf measurement of 14 1/2. The horizontal measurement is not (for me) possible to measure...even under 10x magnification, but it appears to be doubled. If this is the case, it would be Campbell Paterson G10f (SG#360 variety), a tough one to find.

Tall tales, and true....New Zealand.

In 1940, New Zealand printing a bi-coloured 1d (One Penny) stamp.
For a years supply, it would take 42 weeks to produce.

This 26 June 1939 Auckland Loose Letters hand cancel seems to imply that this was a thick or oversized letter which did not conform to specifications for mail processing equipment.

Guess:
"Loose Letters" handstamp may be mail handed to the Captain / Purser / delegated person, whilst on route from one port to another.
or,
Ship mail posted at wharf, similar to PAQUEBOT

Uncommon postmark.

Not seen in ASKPHIL or 2 other Glossaries,
Noted "Loose letter sack"
in the Romanian Czernawoda Rail stamps discussion.

Regarding Postcard Cancellation



The New Zealand "Commerce" stamp, was (in my experience) the first time evidence of machine cancellations.
The bars are common on this issue.

I would suggest yours is a machine cancellation, with evidence that stamps? or a cinderella label, has been removed from the card, adjacent to that stamp.

I see evidence of whiter areas, suggesting removal?

Regarding my previous posting of a postcard with a 1 d "Universal" stamp with postmark of 4 horizontal lines, the supposition that there was a label attached to the card is incorrect. I have closely examined the area to the left of stamp, and there is absolutely no disruption to the paper surface; no evidence that anything was ever placed there. If there is a "white area", it does not show up under sunlight, black light, nor incandescent light.



Here is another item. It appears to be a modern tpo cancel of AUCKLAND RAILWAY.

I cannot read the centre pmk, but doubt it is a RTPO. The right-hand is not an RTPO either, but one of the many NZ small post offices located at a train station and ending in "Railway." Unsure which one this is, but there were many P.O.s like this, including "Auckland Railway", "Christchurch Railway", "Motupiko Railway", etc.

New Zealand Centennial Exhibition 1940

Have a Scott 98 used as a Revenue to add to this thread.

Here is a 2d "second sideface' (perf 11, 1897) on a cover from Masterton to Mangaweka. Cancel is a "squared circle" (introduced in NZ in 1882) dated 25 June 00. Notation on the front is a "L.S.D. currency" subtraction calculation in the hand of the sender.

Cancellations on the reverse show that the letter was sent to Marton on the same day via rail (RPO). Also, the letter was received in Mangaweka (pop. 90, in 2018) on June 25th.

The light pencil notations are courtesy of my NZ trading partner from many moons ago.

Here are a few more of the "squared circle" postmarks. The Gisbourne pmk has only one full circle with the square.
