Yes, found another MASTERTON with similar FLEURON 3 ring I would suggest these types attributed to a cancelling hammer producer/supplier, using similar designs in a batch order for NZ Post. You will need to turn your head on the side, to see and realise the St Andrew's cross and 4 dots. This, the only one in my 1,500 NZ stamps. |

The Masterton mark is interesting. I found a second Dunedin postmark of the same type as other I showed on a pair of 1 s, Wellington printed birds. I wouldn't hazard a guess whether they were decorative, or indicated a particular window or clerk as user...or something else. Here is another Wellington printing, perf 14, of the 6 d kiwi with enough marginal space on the left to show what looks to me like a plate marking. |

Bob, is a "plate marking" the same as what I call an LOM, a location marker?

Peter, I believe that with some of the early NZ intaglio-printed stamps where the printing plates were prepared in New Zealand, some dots/small holes, or indentations were made to help as guides in the image transfer process. I can't quote "chapter and verse" on this because it has been a long while since I read this. |

Personally, I would think any plate marks, location marks on NZ Issues be located in the selvedge, not occurring within the confines of the stamp limits. Opinion only. Apropos plate mark, I offer these Plate Marks in reference to Australian philately. The two are not connected, but may give rise to reflection, or suggestion. Plate Marks Australia |

Here is a small (23mm x 20.5mm) boxed "LETTER" postal label on a fragment with New Plymouth 13 JL 81 postmark. |

Wow. Thanks Rod, that really adds some context. There is no return address on the envelope and no enclosure. The correspondence could have been anything, but I'm guessing that this might have been an inquiry to Mr. Solomon. Here is a WWI field post card from Egypt to Napier, NZ. The shape of the "N's" on the address threw me for a minute. Number on street address is pencilled in. Looks like family chatter. The card is an odd size: 139mm x 62mm. |
