No problem, our_elephant, great to know the year, but they are a real mystery, can't find them in my catalogues. I will keep looking! The meter label is dated 2012 of course, so let's keep it here :) |

Issue 965 - 750th Anniversary of Chiang RaiIssued: 26th January 2012 / 2555 This commemorative stamp features a statue of King Mangrai, the founder of the city of Chiang Rai in northern Thailand. Chiang Rai is further north than Thailand's second city of Chiang Mai, and is the gateway to beautiful mountain scenery on the border with Laos and Burma. Phu Chi Fa is a popular tourist destination: visitors get up before dawn to climb to the top of the mountain and watch the sunrise over a sea of fog in the Mekong valley: Chiang Rai has significant cultural importance for Thailand. The Emerald Buddha, Thailand's most sacred Buddha image, lay hidden in one of the stupas at Wat Pa Yiah (a temple in the city). In the year 1434, a bolt of lightning split the stupa, revealing the Buddha image. The Buddha image was gradually relocated further south, as the capital of Thailand also moved south (away from invaders from the north). The Emerald Buddha is now situated in the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew) in the Grand Palace in Bangkok. Wat Pa Yiah has also been renamed Wat Phra Kaew since the discovery of the statue. Wat Phra Kaew in Chiang Rai: This commemerative issue is also available as FDC: Details from the back of the FDC: (Photos from our trip to northern Thailand in 2009.) |

Normally the Siam Online Catalogue site quotes number issued and designer but it's missing for the 80th Anniversary of the Excise Department. Anyone know? |

William and philb, hope you enjoy the topic. I am a new collector, and I mainly collect modern Thai stamps because they are easy to obtain, and give some insight to my adopted country. Thailand Post has used some unusual techniques in recent years: silk stamps, invisible ink, perfumed stamps, a grain of rice on a stamp... mainly to draw collectors in, I suppose, but I find them interesting. |

ThaiWanderer - I'm afraid I was looking at the wrong FDC when I posted the designer of the 80th Anniversary of the Excise Department. The designer is actually Mrs Veena Chantanatat. Sorry! |
