sorry Stampvirgin. I was only trying to make a point that one should not expect to get rich by selling a bunch of common stamps, 1st day covers, etc. Regarding the number of posts, I was under the impression that they applied to buyers, but you are correct, I should have paid more attention to rules. I guess the offer is considered nul and void.

I'll take a chance and offer 20$ for the collection

How can one make an offer on something they have not seen? I have sought expert advice on the value of a holding and would feel slighted if the reply was that someone was willing to take a chance on buying what I have.

I'm sorry if I came out as rude or obnoxious. It was not my intention to do so. I just dislike people who this wonderful hobby as a cash grab and if this is not you, then I do apologize.

I can honestly say hand on heart that the value/profit etc on my stamps is never a consideration for me, I enjoy collecting for the sake of collecting. I find the sorting/cateloguing etc a relaxing way to pass the time, and at the moment, value means very little to me :)

If this is the one I'm thinking of, I believe he paid around $1800 for a collection (With a lot of nice classics) and sold the 1 Piece for $35,000.00.

Strocksj, understand that the majority of Stamps issued after 1935 are only worth pennies. There are exceptions but not many, and the ones that are worth money usually fall under the EFO category (Errors, freaks & oddities) which are ones with omitted colors, Imperf between a pair of perforated stamps etc.

If you can post up some good high resolution scans or Pictures of the Stamps we can get you pointed in the right direction.

I agree that strockj is doing the right thing. The more knowledge the better. Check what you can in a catalog. Add up the face value of the mint stamps. This way you have a better idea on how to approach to sell.

Thanks for all the help! I really appreciate it! I will upload some pictures once I get things a bit more organized.

The good news is in doing some more research, I've found out the Angola Birds and Mozambique Fish were both sets that created some excitment in the international collecting world in the 1950s. They do have Scott value of about $600, ebay sales about $125.

The Postmasters of America series with Silver Medallions have some value too, largely because of the value of Silver right now. I've seen those sets on ebay with bids at $300, which is nice.

I've also found some resources to match the CCCP stamps, and discovered I have the SPY series, which is kind of cool...no value, but cool. I have more research to do on the others.

I've since found mint stamps from "NORGE" which I think is Norway, from the 1950s also....so I'll check those out.

It appears my Dad was able to buy nice mint stamps before he married my mom and had kids! After that, it was mostly FDCs and found used stamps....but many of his have nice Cachets.

I have to say, though, I'm smitten now. I think it will be hard to part with any of them, and I want to sort through the bags of used stamps from all over the world that Dad had too....

It is a bit overwhelming, and he didn't seem to have a focus for his collection. I think I'll choose a topic I like and continue to collect/investigate in that vein. (Music, Space, Dogs?) I'm also a coin collector, and need to do the same with that collection.

Stamps and coins are beautiful, but a collector never really gets what he puts into it.....you have to collect for the love of it....

I'm sure I'll have lots more questions. Hopefully a newbie won't annoy people too much.
