Hi,

Is this a variety? There is an extra line near the knife and over POSTES.

Thank you!

There are a few varieties on this stamp (one of my favorites) and if not mistaken it is the scar face variety (cheek of sailor sitting or kneeling down) However the line your reffering to looks to be a plate crack or scratch . Not sure if its a listed variety - other causes may be as simple as a hair on the plate so it may not be constant. My older unitrade also states about a burr variety . Reading more the scar face variety has a plate position that wouldn't be consistant with your imperf edge. Interesting and maybe someone else can shed better light. If someone has a confirmed scarface variety a comparison scan would be great.

Gilles, I don't know what to look for. Could you do a zoomed in scan of that area, the sailors face and point out the scar part? Please?

Cdnum, looks like a hair on the plate as stated above. Neat though and very collectible.

Here is the 'burr on shoulder' variety of Scott #208.

Here it is in a block of 4 (Scott 208i). The variety is the UL stamp.

Here is a zoomed in scan of the variety.
