Canada Scott Number 41 IV

Here is something I just got "The vampire bite" (left stamp). Pretty well centered too. I wonder how much it is worth as a pair like this.

Someone with more experience will likely come soon. But without knowing the perfs and paper type it's hard to give an accurate value.

Anytime you have a known listed variety with a regular the value is increased. Simply makes showing the variety and differences so much easier. Even with the roller cancel that usually makes things hard to see -you can pick out the bite marks super easy. Great pair and thank you for posting

Specialized items like this are hard to give a concrete value to but as stated, a connected pair showing regular and variety will command a strong premium from the right buyer.

Nice to see Canada Scott#41 1888 3c small queen vampire bite paired with a normal one. Checked "bites" on ebay and they seem to do quite well.

I was just fortunate to pick up one of these. A bit stained (any advice?), but the bite is clearly visible.

My guess is between $75 to $150 depending on condition. I've seen asking prices up to $200. The pair is probably closer to the $150 range. The roller cancel is not that bad because it is light and it is not a common one.

These only appeared sometime between 1892-97 and quantities are quite scarce. This one is dated 1892 and I have one dated 1894. Here is one below that has a faint mark dated 1897. I assume the mark changed over the years and wore down to nothing.

I have two copies of the Vampire Bite variety they are both from the same state. Here is an image of one:

I'm going to keep looking for these items, both for their scarcity and oddity. I am wondering about jimjung's copies. Unitrade describes the mark as, "two triangular marks on queen's neck". The first of jimjung is very obvious, the other two less so. At least the timeframe for the cancellations are good.

Also, love the OP's pair. Excellent centering and neat to have the contrast.

Here's the last copy I have from 1894. I also have a few of the unlisted varieties of the 3c SQ that are quite dramatic. I will try to post when I have a moment.

Here's one to start - This is the String of Pearls on the 3c SQ. Look at the lower margin. This is listed in a book by Hans Reiche.

Note that the "Vampire Bite" variety should also show damage to the right fleur-de-lys decoration above "CENTS" and to the bottom left tip of the numeral 3. Although all the marks and their shadows fade over time, there should still be traces of these additional marks if the neck bites show prominently.

The first example shown by jimjung is actually quite a stunning example showing prominent bites with shadows and very strong marks in the right fleur-de-lys and 3 value. A real beauty. Wow!

I would question the next two examples shown by jimjung since they do not show any trace of the lower right marks and the bites are also a little different than what is usually associated with this variety even in the later faded states/versions.

The fourth example shown separately by jimjung is a great example of how the variety typically occurs with strong bite marks (but without shadows) and slightly less strong marks in the fleur-de-lys and 3 value. The other examples shown in this post match this one fairly well.
