While perusing postmark odds and ends I noticed an item that I presumably had obtained because of the arrival London "hooded postmark" backstamp.

I never paid much attention to the US stamps on the front... until today. Is this a pair of 219D with a few faults ? I cannot tell my lake from my carmine these days. Maybe some kind person can identify and if of more philatelic worth than the backstamp
Is that a flaw after the word CENTS... or just wishful thinking?

It's always difficult specing colour from a scan via the interweb, but I would say that is carmine, making it a #220.
I don't see that flaw listed in Scott's specialty catalogue, but if it were a legitimate flaw, I'd think it would add a small premium.

Maybe this comparison will help from my collection showing 219D Lake variety (left) and 220 Carmine variety (right):

So... I have a pair of 220's with faults. Even the backstamp on the cover is not great so back to the "others" box it goes.
Thanks.

Anybody interested in military history or weaponry might find the history of the Gardner Gun Co. worth a read:

http://www.gardnerguns.com/HistoryHTM/History.htm

In a nutshell, they made a hand-cranked machine gun that didn't topple the Gatling gun for U.S. service, but that found favor with the British, especially the Royal Navy.

Before you toss it into the "others" box, you might want to make sure that the stamped envelope isn't Scott U318, rather than Scott U311 -- a used entire is listed at $50 in the Scott 2011 Specialized catalog ($.25 for the 311).

To be honest... the cover has not enough going for it to justify the outlay in getting a Scott's specialized catalogue. Thanks for the info re postal stationery though. I might get around to obtaining a Specialized one day.
