On July 28, 1998 Canada issued its 2nd "Scenic Highways" series as a set of four, 45c stamps arranged in se-tenant fashion in a traditional sheet. One of these stamps (Sc #1739), shown here, depicts the picturesque Dempster highway, Yukon with a large caribou on the left. From wikipedia, "The reindeer (Rangifer Tarandus) also known as the caribou in North America, is a species of deer with circumpolar distribution, native to the Arctic, sub-Arctic, boreal, and mountainous regions of Northern Europe, Siberia, and North America." |

Here is the 74c value (Sc #1177) from Canada's "Canadian Mammals" definitive series of 1988-93. Stamp was issued on January 18, 1988 and it depicts a wapiti (Cervus canadensis). From wikipedia, The elk or wapiti is one of the largest species within the deer family, Cervidae...Elk were long believed to belong to a subspecies of the European red deer (Cervus elaphus), but evidence from many mitochondrial DNA genetics studies beginning in 1998 shows that the two are distinct species." |

Here is another stamp showing a reindeer-drawn sledge. This stamp (Facit # 128) of Greenland was issued on March 26, 1981. It features a drawing done by native son Jens Kreutzmann (1828-1899). In the 1860's, Kreutzmann (born Kretzmer), not an academically trained artist, did a series of drawings depicting everyday life of Greenlanders. These drawings are now in the collection of the Greenland National Museum. |
