In 1998, Ireland issued a pair of stamps in two different formats (traditional sheet, and self-adhesive coil) for its "EUROPA" issue. One of designs shows "King Puck', a crowned billy goat associated with the ancient fair in Killorglin. From Wikipedia, "Puck Fair (Irish: Aonach an Phoic, meaning 'Fair of the He-Goat) is one of Ireland's oldest fairs. It takes place annually in Killorglin, County Kerry. Every year a group of people go up into the mountains and catch a wild goat. The goat is brought back to the town and the 'Queen of Puck', traditionally a young school girl crowns the goat 'King Puck.' The goat is then put into a cage on a high stand for three days, and on the third day of the fair, he is brought down to be led back to the mountains. In the middle of the town square he is crowned and this signifies that the festivities may begin." The coil stamp (Sc #1127) is shown here. Second pic shows the bronze King Puck statue in Killorglin. |

An anthropomorphic goat carrying a lit candle while riding a wolf is depicted on this 2005 Christmas stamp of Latvia. Perhaps the goat is carrying the candle to welcome the re-birth of the pagan sun god Mithras on the winter solstice. |

This stamp, featuring a young boy and a goat hauling a Christmas tree, is from a booklet of two different designs (8 stamps) issued by Norway on November 17, 2000 to honor two native comics artists. The stamp depicts Nils og Blamann (Eng.= Nils and Blamann), a creation of Ivar Mauritz-Blamann (1897-1972). From Comiclopedia, lambiek.net website, "Ivar Mauritz-Hansen was a pioneering Norwegian comics artist best known for his series Nils og Blamann...From 1929 the series appeared in books...The series ran until 1967." |
