The workings of the railway mails in 19th Century British India: a letter from Jind State, in the Punjab, to Bombay. The L.3-OT/2 is, I think, Line 3 outward from Lahore, CDS No.2. The cover also has a nice 'TRAIN LATE' cachet (and is a combination cover of Jind State and British Indian postage)

And an example of the Jaipur State RMS (Railway Mail Service) CDS

Now if I could only find the cover it came on ...

Not strictly a railway marking,

but a 100 year-old 'Your call is important to us ...' from the British Bombay & Central India Railway.

And one for Rod222, to show there're no hard feelings after our nasty spat over the Nagpur Dead Letter Office ...

Travancore-Cochin, the 1949 block SERVICE overprint on the 2 Pies surcharge, perf 12 (SG O1f), with an EXPerimentaL Railway Mail Service CDS for May 1951. In the Indian mail system, Experimental PO cancels were usually issued to trial post offices for a limited period. If the PO proved viable, it was issued with its own permanent CDS. The Experimental cancels were also issued as temporary replacements for lost or (badly) damaged permanent cancels.

That was the probably the case here, as the ordinary stamps of Travancore-Cochin became obsolete in July 1951, and the Service stamps in September that year. Hardly likely the Travancore-Cochin Post Office was testing the viability of another railway mail service a few months before it was shut down.

You mean the "Returned Letter Office" don't you?

Nope, not speaking to you anymore,
posting Travancore will not help
which I know you secretly collect.

I am returning my "Support the Indian States" lapel badge by return mail.

Hmm, and eclectic lot in this thread,
I'll have to see what I can unearth..........

How about something Toothsome?

Since Young Rodney has turned all pettish, I'll offer Hyderabad State instead:

The 1931 Pictorial 4 Pies printing from the plates missing the background lines in the centre, sent from Khairabad to Aminpet, and the stamps cancelled with the Hyderabad State Railways Section 13 IN Set 2 CDS, probably dating from 1946

Here is another Mail delayed due to Train being late. I love these covers as it had to happen quite often to create a Machine stamping for it.
