My question is, what did happen to stamp collecting in the 1970s? I get the impression there was some kind of a "bubble", there was a lot of speculation, and when the bubble burst, a lot of people got burned, and swore off stamp collecting thereafter. I also remember seeing an English language Bolaffi Vatican catalog from the period that showed rather high prices for stamps that even today are very inexpensive.

So, to those who were there, what happened?
