I have no intention of counting my stamps. Sorry, but I have far better things to do with my time. And besides.......... Quote: CTOs and Sand Dunes would count... Cinderellas wouldn't. Local posts? Mac hit the nail on the head...... Quote: Them thar might be fighting words to a few Nuff said. Londonbus1 |

Quote: as a reader im looking for experience collectors discussing issues that im faceing and things to help my collection grow and if I can answer someone elses concerns great ,and as always enjoy seeing what someone have to show and what their doing I agree with floortrader. There's huge amounts of stamp related information online, but very little of it has appeal to "seasoned worldwide collectors" like me. I think one of the main causes is that there is only a very limited number of collectors reaching this level of insanity, LOL. As I've been blogging about the joys & sorrows of large scale worldwide collector for 3+ years, I can share that coming up with something "newsworthy" becomes more and more challenging the further you get on the road. This is a very niche topic, and there's a limited number of things you can say about it without starting to repeat things time and again. So I understand well why for example ISWSC has chosen to cover mostly generic and basic topics. Anyway, congrats to landoquakes for coming up with a fun idea :) -keijo- |

geez. I could've joined that club 30+ years ago, when I was a young teen. but girls and cars won the "battle of the buck" and I quit stamps until the last couple of years. now, with a more focused mind (and a smaller wallet) I am optimistic that I will eventually make it up to about 10,000 max. |

landoquakes: I also enjoy getting a good boxlot or collection to go through. A couple months back I bought a large box of all different stamps from one of my favorite dealers on e-bay. I am still going through that box trying to sort out all those stamps! I usually don't buy from the redboxes either for my worldwide collection, but have bought a few nice German items that way. I have discovered that finding new and different ways to get worldwide stamps is going to be key to building my collection. |

tikithindi, here's how I would classify those. If I have a set of stamps plus a souvenier sheet with all the stamps I only count the stamps. I don't count up the set plus the ones in a souvenier sheet. If you don't have the set of stamps that is on a souvenier sheet you can count all the stamps in the sheet. I try not to count the same stamps twice. A sheet 50 or 100 stamps that is all the same would count as one stamp. There would be only one catalog number for those. If you have a sheet of 50 different stamps then it would be a count of 50. |

Not to knock the Cinderella folks but one has to draw a line somewhere! I love Cinderellas myself. Some Cinderellas are the most beautifully designed stamps in the world and I'd be open to hear an argument to include some Cinderellas. I think every world collector has a stash of them somewhere.

kuhli You made me have another thought. There is probably different advice I would give to people at the 10,000 level, 50,000 level etc. You're at a fun point where many stamps you get will fit those empty spaces. So many stamps before about 1975 are cheap and plentiful you should have no problem finding them. My first page I found on the web was EB Denson's page and his advice is still good 10 years later. http://www.asis.com/users/edenson/wwhome.html |

So many stamps before about 1975 are cheap and plentiful you should have no problem finding them. You also have to take into account peoples' different collecting tastes and interests. I am only collecting stamps from Yugoslavia and the former republics of Yugoslavia. by narrowing down my focus, I am limiting my collection growth. as I said earlier, I hope to eventually reach close to 10,000, which is probably almost everything available within my collecting scope. of course, as I get closer to that goal, and have fewer available options, I also have tangents to drift off into, such as cindys, revenues, etc. but, as long as my OCD keeps working, I can always find something to add. |

reading the above postings ,there is a big difference in thought over this subject .Any group that puts itself out as serious collectors no matter what the speciality will always attach those of less experience. I don't think a group or a discussion on-line needs to stop or restrict anybody from joining . But experience collectors want two things ,the first being what other collectors are doing who have a like passion and interest in the hobby ,and second what can they learn that will increase there own joy of the hobby . Serious collectors can be anyone from recent kilo lot buyers to people like me who purchase 5 different Brazil collections and stockbook inventories and spend over $2,000 just to get all the different watermarks correct on the early issues and after having looked at different Brazil collections over many years ,nobody had got those issues correct . This past week I when thru three collections of New Zealand and all had errors of watermarks and perforations mismounted and not placed correctly ,again sat down and made pages with the correct identifaction and thats the stuff my collection contains orderly and correctly identified stamps . Let me give you a sample ----------- There are two or three stamp auction dealers in the U.S. that sell large bulk lots to collectors ,if you buy from them first the lots will have two problems ,the first everything over $25.00 has been removed so the lots have been cleaned ,only stuff of any value is damaged or incomplete sets , the second issue with these firms is that the lots are "manufactured" by a consignor or more likely put together by the firm to be sold as "Treasure lots" "estate lots" or "back room" lots . Also another area of interest is the many lots on ebay that are over-priced for what you get ,if your buying country lots or collections ,its not hard to identify picked over lots and seeing stuff that should be purchased for pennies on the dollar but instead are sold as "fabulous" "stunning" "fantastic" and other silly words ,when in fact your getting broken sets, damaged stamps and the stuff found in cheap mixture lots all mounted to present to you as something special and expensive .........that the kind of comments that are interesting to more serious collectors . Serious collectors want to know what are you doing with your duplicates ,how you keep your forgeries, your cinderalls , and stuff they themselfs care about . |

It's certainly an interesting idea-- although I doubt I'd ever have 100,000 different stamps, by catalogue number. I'm not a Worldwide collector.
Several of my primary collections are cancels/postmarks-- and I may have 800 copies of the same stamp, but with different cancels. For the purposes of my collection, I consider them "different." To most people, they'd probably look like "packet material." I also collect minor varieties-- and whereas they are documented in specialist literature (GB Machins, for example), they are certainly not distinguishable by "main" catalogue number.
Just some more thoughts for the discussion.

Wow! A 100,000 different cat number stamps is a lot of stamps.
I do not think I would be anywhere close to that. I would be lucky to have 3,000 different.
