Here's another oddity, a double 5 on the shirt of the stamp. No listing in Unitrade and I can't find my Darnel book. Also would this maybe a modern re-entry, might just send it to that site to see what they say. Well enjoy and comments please.

PS This is a Se-tenant of 674 and 675 vertical with no apparent variety on 674, just the black 5 on 675.

I think what you are seeing is simply mis-registration of the blue (cyan) and black plates. Sometimes black is not simply black, it might also have another colour printed under it (in this case blue) to give the black area an extra richness that would not be achieved with straight black.

...or the black is miss-registered.

I'm suggesting they both are. See around the mouth were you can see red (magenta) and where the blue has shifted into the yellow on the back. But the black has moved even further in the other direction. 4 colour lithography with poor registration.

So in a nut shell the plate would have had a 5 cut outa the orange shirt and the black would have been printed on that. So basically the black was not alined properly, causing the look of doubling. So I would still like to know how often this occurred I only have 40ish copies and this is the only one I found. And thanks jamesw and BeeSee.

Happens a lot I'm afraid. There were 73,000,000 of these printed. Things are bound to slip.

I have checked about 30, and although none are as mis-matched as yours, I have 3 that have black misaligned.
