If anyone has a set of the Minkus worldwide catalogs and a little free time, I would appreciate knowing what the Minkus catalog number is for the last 19th century stamp for any of the following countries. I.e., what is the cutoff for the last stamp (probably a definitive) issued before 1900.
Austria Bavaria Germany (Empire) Hungary Italy Mexico Mozambique Company Sweden
Even knowing the cutoff number for one or two of the above countries would help with a project I'm doing. Thanks.
Jerry, many thanks. I wondered if it was more likely that people who still had a Minkus catalog would be more likely to have one for the Americas than for Europe.
I collect Colombia, Ecuador and some Venezuela. My first specialized catalog was the 1980 Minkus Latin America catalog.
I do not know what your project is but if you need anything else let me know by e-mail at jerrybemail-stamps 'at' yahoo 'dot' com. Please put SCF somewhere in the title so its not deleted as spam.
Jerry, I'm doing a coverage comparison of the Minkus Supreme Global to several other worldwide albums for pre-1900 stamps. The way the Minkus album is arranged though makes it difficult to do a count without a lot of effort. But since Minkus gives the catalog number for each stamp, if I know the ending catalog number for the 1800s, the comparison becomes much simpler.
In a way it is a little deceiving. Minkus has whole numbers but they also have things like 55 55p 55p1. In the 1800's they also have locals, G prefix, listed. So the last number that I gave you may not be the actual stamp total.
Personally, I do not have any album problems since I have been using blank quadrille pages for at least 50 years. It affords me a way to "do it my way". I have pages with both stamps and covers and everything is essentially chronological order. If a set of stamps comprises regular issues and air mail issues, the entire set is on a single page. I don't think many albums do that.
Bottom line is that I am not sure why you would want to compare the Minkus Supreme Global to other albums. I would think that it would be unusual for two albums from different publishers to cover the same material in the same way.
If you are doing the comparison to find a album for yourself with the most complete coverage I can only suggest making your own pages. I do not because it would take forever to design, print and remount many hundreds of quadrille pages (also everything is in mounts).
