Any Way To Fix "Wavy" Mounts

I have 2 packs of showguard mounts that are pretty old. When I went to use then last night, the mount doesn't lie flat but buckles up and down along the mount, giving it a appearance of a wave. I have had this happen with mounts before.

The back of the mount is also a little more transparent when held up to light than a flat showguard mount.

Is there any way to save these mounts? Can I iron them?

I don't want to throw away 2 packs of mounts if I can avoid it.

For all the years using Showgard mounts I have never found a method for "flattening" wavy mounts. I usually feel the package before I buy them. I do know most dealers will replace them if you send them back.

However, since you say your mounts are old I guess you are out-of-luck. I will use the non-wavy portion of the mount for narrow items. If narrow they seem to flatten out on the page.


I have noticed that also. It may be a production flaw.

One reason I do not use Scott or Prinz mounts is that they all seem that way and also feel flimsy.

I have never bought a Scott/Prinz mount that was wavy. I only ever have the issue with Showguard. I posted in another thread that 10 year old mounts I found in my garage; the showguards were in far worse shape than the Scott/Prinz mounts. were.

I'm sticking with Scott if at all possible. The problem is, the stamp store near me only sells Showguard,

Yep, AMOS advantage is very good. I just ordered a three lens Bausch and Lomb loupe for $19.00(US) using Amos advantage. THe discount on new catalogues is also substantial.

Split back mounts seem to be subject to this. I bought a new Lighthouse hingeless album at a big discount on ebay last year and had to replace all the mounts for the souvenir sheets. They were larger and split back and all were wrinkled up. This was apparently old stock this guy got at a discount from the company. He denied any knowledge of the problem but I think he knew.

There is another forum I am on, where people feel that split back mounts are some kind of philatelic evil made in the lowest levels of hell. I disagree with them. If you use a glue stick with them, you'll be fine.

I can usually get wavy ones to flatten out by wetting the mount right along the bottom and top and then "spreading" the mount out to be level when I place it in the album. Hold it in place for a few seconds for the glue to set, and the album page will actually keep it flat and straight.
