United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim officially designated 1974 as World Population Year. Here is an image of a stamp depicting an infant, the globe and the WPY emblem, designed and engraved by Jacques Combet, and issued by Niger on March 4, 1974 to publicize this UN designation, Scott No. 297. Note: In the year I was born, the global population was about 2.5 billion. In 1974, it reached 4 billion. And now it is estimated to be somewhat over 7 billion.
