Pic from a friend.

Kingdom of Italy / Regno d'Italia 1926 (I think, correction welcome of course)

Searching on ebay to find something similar, as I do not have an Italian catalogue, I found that using the Italian words 'varieta floreale' (floral variety) returned some similar examples to this.

The floral ornamentation is missing or failing (Italian ornato mancan).

The examples on ebay I have seen so far have an overall failure of the ornamentation. But this stamp, as seen ,is half off, half on.

Questions: what caused this? under-inking of some sort? Is this type of variety valued somewhere online? What is this stamp series called (who is the guy on the stamp)?

. . . and please excuse my Italian.

My first thought after looking at them was under inking but I am not an expert here.

The person depicted is King Victor Emmanuel III. The high denomination stamps in the series are bicolored. On the 1 lire error stamp, the missing floral design is a color missing error. I'm not sure about the other bicolor denominations -- those may be underinking freaks, but don't hold me to that.

Your stamp is a partial color changeling.

Thank you.

Do you mean it has the posibility of having been manipulated chemically or otherwise by a person or persons unknown to the printer?

Ah, I looked at the stamp again and now I see what I was choosing not to notice before. I was only seeing the details of what I wanted to see.

Mine (my friend's) stamp has the border and the floral elements both missing or under-inked, while on the examples from ebay the border is always complete while the inner floral elements are under-inked / colour missing.

The border missing colour also is a strong indication to me of external manipulation and a colour changling.

I just got back. Yes, you answered your own question with that last post.

These oddball color changelings are always a great conversation piece. Whenever you come across them, put them on a album page next to a normal stamp. Makes for an interesting mini-collection.
