Just came across this stamp from the Republic of China. According to the 2006 Scott, it might be the C42. Perhaps one of the China Experts could take a look at the stamp and educate me. Thank you very much! Hawk

I don't know what level of detail Scott goes into, but I assume you're hoping this is the expensive one. It probably isn't, I'm afraid. The Chan catalogue lists the $73 surcharge on the 3rd Peking printing, and on the Hong Kong printings, on either watermarked or unwatermarked paper. This is what Chan shows on how to distinguish the Peking and Hong Kong printings: Without knowing the perforations, your stamp looks like a Hong Kong printing. Chan lists either type at $1, as against $2000 for the Peking printing. |

Tony is correct, it is definitely NOT C42 because the stamp is Hong Kong printing, not Peking printing.
Since it is Hong Kong printing, it will either be C45(watermarked) or C50(unwatermarked) in the Scott catalog. |

I have the same stamp as scan showing by hawkstamp.. I was thinking it is scott C42...but later I realised that it could be C45 or C50 either one...
"China overprint stamps" one of hard JOB to find in scott catalogue
Second king of "Overprints stamps" country is Guyana They love to do overprints on "Previously Overprinted" stamps\ They leave tiny space for next overprints..
is anybody notice this ? |

This thread brings back memories! The one and only real 'Find' that I ever found was the China C42. Around 25 years ago, while still a young teenager, I found what I thought was one in an album. I sent it to a dealer whose ad I found in Linn's, and received a letter from him offering $225 (or was it $400, I can't remember but I think it was $225). To surprised to even think of bargaining or asking a different dealer for an offer, I accepted, and much to my parents shock, a check for $225 duly came in the mail! It gave them a new respect for the hobby. A few weeks later, my friend asked me to look through his album where I saw what I initialy thought was a C42 again. But it turned out to be a cheap version. Lightning doesn't strike twice. |

Chan rates it at $1 mint, either watermarked or unwatermarked, $0.40 used without watermark, and $0.80 used with watermark. |

I inherited a book of ten unused C45 (or C50) stamps that my grandfather picked up in China between 1943-46. I'm glad to find a forum that helps me figure out what I have. Now I've got to figure out the other stamps he left. |
