Hello, Are these Persian revenues. One seems to have a partial overprint on it. Any idea what the full overprint says?
Thank you
David

Turkey
Can't find these exact stamps, but that is the 'Tughra', Monogram of Sultan Abdul-Aziz.

The brown one is a Fixed Fees revenue and the blue one is a Newspapers and Advertisements revenue. The second one would have been applied to the paper before the newspaper or advert was printed so what you see is probably part of a heading from the document.

Both show the tughra (formal signature) of Sultan Abdul Hamid II.

Hmm. There are subtle differences between the Sultans tughras. They, and Mohammed V's, look the same to me. A picture may not be worth a thousand words.

I agree, they are confusing. My attempted identification was based on the pictures and listings in McDonald's revenue catalogue.

These two designs are too late to be Sultan Abdul-Aziz. However, there was some overlap in designs between Abdul Hamid II and Mohammed V and I'm assuming the 10 paras stamp here is brown rather than red and identifying that stamp on that basis.

Have you seen this web site?

http://www.tugra.org/en/tugralar.asp

It has fascinating information on the construction and meaning of tughras without as far as I can see giving much help when it comes to identifying Ottoman revenue stamps.
