Net searching has failed to yield the answer, so I have to ask. Does anyone know what the 'S.C' refers to in the following cancel:

Could it be, perhaps, Sorting Centre?

Thanks for looking!

jimjamtwo, You might be right - however even though I now live in New Zealand I'm not big on postmarks - however I offer this alternative formally the area of Auckland now known as North Shore City was known as Shore City, perhaps a more educated answer will posted.
Cheers Mate

Thanks for the comment, Sydneyboy.

As far as I have been able to establish, the only common usage for the abbreviation 'S.C.' is 'Swim Club.' Here's an extract from an 1894 issue of the Auckland Star:

I suppose it's possible that there was a post office at the Auckland Swim Club.

Is that an 'S.C.' or 'S.O.'? SO would be much easier: 'Sorting Office' perhaps.

I was thinking the same thing as it looks like "S.O." to me. Also, I've seen period postmarks from New Zealand that have the city name followed by "S.O.S.D." (although I'm not sure what that acronym means), which may or may not relate to the example shown.

Thanks for the contributions, tonmacg, wt1.

This is a possibility I can rule out, however - fortunately, the same lot that this stamp came in included another two 1d Dominions with clear strikes of the last portion of the cancel. It's definitely 'S.C.' and not 'S.O.'

UPDATE: Net searching has finally paid off. From the Wanganui Chronicle (1894), comes the following item, which is part of a list of transfers of post office employees:

So the answer must be Auckland South Central.
