I read that article earlier today and it seemed to me it was little more than someone taking an old canceled postcard and placing it in back in a mailbox in 2012. Having multiple postmarks decades apart is an almost sure sign that's what happened.
I'm a bit puzzled as to why it made the news, as it doesn't sound like it's anything more than that.
Also, the first recipient of the card apparently had little knowledge of stamp collecting, with an inaccurate quote that read in part:
"Then I went to Google and found out the 2-cent stamp was used in 1959 and again in the 1980s."
