I use Michel, but I know several others on this board haven't had as much luck with it. I think it largely depends on how specialized you want to get. If you want a basic German collection Scott would suffice. If you want to specialize, Michel's the only way to go.
The upside to Michel:
1. It's far, far, far, far, far, far, far more detailed. 2. You can occasionally get a bargain on a rare item because sellers using Scott or SG don't recognize the rarity of a particular variety.
The downside:
1. It's in German. An English version exists, but it's overpriced and not as complete. 2. If you're dealing with US sources for buying, selling, or trading, it can be an obstacle. Most use Scott numbers and pricing. |

War-gaming stuff, nice. I used to do that years ago. Must look at that later. May I suggest that you use Germany instead of German when describing your stamp lots? , ebay's new search may find both if either is entered but I do not know. |

You can get Michel catalogs from several sources. The most common are direct from Michel, Amazon, or ebay. I also buy frequently from Werner Zielniewicz. I wouldn't recommend the software version of Michel's catalog. It's nowhere near as good as the printed catalogs. It contains the listings of stamps and prices, but it omits much of the surrounding text, notes, comments, etc. It generally sells for about $90-$100. Michel's basic catalog for 2011/2012 is about $50. The Specialized catalogs for 2012 are about $100 a volume (it's a 2 volume set). |

I would recommend you get the Germany Specialized catalog. I use it myself and I'm very satisfied. |
