I have this odd little stamp in my collection that I know nothing about. I was hoping that one of Indian States collectors/specialists on our forum could help ID it for me and maybe tell me what it says besides the obvious "POST STAMP" Any insight would be wonderful and thank you for your time.

This is from Hyderabad State, a ½ Anna stamp from a set first issued in 1871, and which continued in use to 1909. The postmark type suggests it belongs earlier in that period - probably the 1870s.

The name of the State itself doesn't appear anywhere. However, the central inscription says in Persian Sarkar-i-Asafia or 'Service of the Asafiyas [the Hyderabad ruling family]' and the year 1286 AH, equivalent to 1869-70 CE. This was sufficient because, with the odd rare exception, these stamps couldn't be used outside Hyderabad State anyway.

Another distinction of the stamps is that they show the value in four languages. Reading clockwise from 12:00: Telugu, Persian, English and Hindi. I don't know my world stamps well enough to speak with certainty, but I wouldn't be surprised if this was the earliest stamp to use four languages.

Thank you very much that's a very informative stamp! Do you have one? It doesn't really fit into my collection anywhere if you want it?

Thanks for that kind offer I_Love_Stamps. As it happens, I already have quite a few of these, but I'm sure there are others here would be interested.

The stamp belongs to a very interesting, and quite involved, set. There are many shades, some nice plate flaws

SG 13h - Dot missing from the Persian inscription at upper left in the central inscription

a surcharge '¼ Anna'

also with the same plate flaws, overprints for official use

plate proofs

and a mystery version on thick blue laid paper

You could practically build a collection around this one stamp!
