I did a search and could not believe I couldn't find a thread devoted to the famous Wartime British Prime Minister, though I know his image has made guest appearances on several. So, in keeping with the Queen's Jubilee (I'm not a royalist, really!), and because my high school was named after him, and because I just happened to recently acquire some of these, let's see some stamps with Sir Winston's famous mug on them. I'll start. He's the face on the left, on this first one. I know there are lots. Dig 'em out!

A 1966 Churchill stamp from Gibraltar and posted at the cable car station near the top of the rock...well, the whole place is a rock! Looking rather grim...and so is Churchill |

Churchill was born this date in 1874. Shortly after his death, the U.S. issued this stamp on May 13, 1965 (Scott 1264). It was designed by Richard Hurd. |

Churchill had one of the greatest comeback lines ever to Lady Astor.
"Lady Astor: "Winston, if I were your wife I'd put poison in your coffee." "Winston Churchill: "Nancy, if I were your husband I'd drink it." |

Just as a piece of trivia, the US Stamp for Winston Churchill (Scott 1264) shown above was issued on 05/13/1965, just 109 days after his death on 01/24/1965... that's less than four months!
The only other non-US President to have had a US stamp issued so quickly after his death was Adlai Stevenson (Scott 1275) that was issued only 101 days after his death. |

Hi jamesw, The image on the GB 4d stamp is a posterised version of the original photograph of Churchill taken by Yousef Karsh of Ottowa. The Canadian Government commisioned Karsh to take the photograph. (Another link for you). The original is also the basis for the US 5c stamp. References state that Karsh got the expression on Churchill's face by snatching away his freshly lit cigar and then releasing the shutter. The rarely seen second photograph is quite different (check out the site link below). More on this epic and daring shoot here........... http://www.iconicphotos.wordpress.c...ousef-karsh/Terry |

Socialist Member of Parliament Bessie Braddock once scolded Churchill with "Sir, you are drunk." to which he replied "Madam, you are ugly but in the morning, I shall be sober." |

Thanks for the link, Terry. It's interesting to see the second image. I am familiar with the story of the cigar. It's impressive to hear of a photographer putting his life on the line for a picture. Here's Canada's 1965 stamp dedicated to Sir Winston. Unfortunately a touch damaged, but aren't we all ? |

Without doubt, one of the finest Philatelic writers of all time, and my personal favourite, was Scotsman, James Alexander Mackay.
He wrote my favourite all time book "An illustrated history of Stamp design"........by William Finlay
He got caught nicking stamps from the Museum, to wit..
In 1972 Mackay was dismissed from his job as an assistant keeper at the British Museum in London after he was convicted at the Old Bailey of stealing valuable proof stamps. He had pleaded guilty to five charges of stealing progressive proofs on loan from the Crown Agents from the Museum in 1965 and 1966 and was fined £1000. He had exchanged the proofs with dealer Clive Feigenbaum for Winston Churchill themed stamps.

Churchill's son, Randolph, was not a chip off the old block. He wasn't universally loved: "Randolph Churchill went into hospital...to have a lung removed. It was announced that the trouble was not 'malignant.' Seeing Ed Stanley in White's, on my way to Rome, I remarked that it was a typical triumph of modern science to find the only part of Randolph that was not malignant and remove it." Diary of Evelyn Waugh, March 1964 |
