Hi All I have been cleaning house and decided to throw away some old auction catalogues. In some of them, there were great illustrations of Canadian proofd and essays and thought I would share them here. What I did was scan some of them and entered them into my files for future reference. here they are: Chimo Bujutsu Reproduction engraving of Queen Victoria (3 x 31/2 inches) and picture (13/4 x 21/2 inches) Die No. 9 and full two-line imprint (Est. Val was $200.00 in the Maresch Auction Oct. 25 – 26, 2000) Reproduction engraving of King Edward VII (2 x 21/2 inches) with Die No. 163. (Est. Val was $200.00 in the Maresch Auction Oct. 25 – 26, 2000) More to follow

Here are some of the more modern essays etc. For myself personally, I think I like the older ones better. You just can't beat the old fashioned engraving on them. Chimo Bujutsu Progressive lithographic Die Proof (6 x 43/4 inches) with blue colour separations. (Est. Val was $500.00 in the Maresch Auction Oct. 25 – 26, 2000) Progressive lithographic Die Proof (6 x 43/4 inches) with blue, green & yellow colour separations. (Est. Val was $750.00 in the Maresch Auction Oct. 25 – 26, 2000) 8 cents Howe full lithographic Die Proof (21/2 x 31/4 inches) with colour separations. (Est. Val was $750.00+ in the Maresch Auction Oct. 25 – 26, 2000) 8 cents Kreighoff, full lithographic Die Proof (31/2 x 33/4 inches) with colour separations and printer's pen marks. (Est. Val was $750.00+ in the Maresch Auction Oct. 25 – 26, 2000) |

Quite excellent Bujutsu, thank you for posting.
Perhaps someone would enjoy having / buying your old catalogue instead of your throwing it out. Not all electronic media last as long as printed media. |

I would agree with Puzzler. I have a few more recent Maresch catalogues (assuming that's what yours are) and find they are terrific for reference. The reproduction quality is quite good. Excellent for leafing through in the reading room. I'm sure someone would be interested. Here's a vignette die proof of Jacques Cartier printed by the British American Bank Note Co. published in Maresch's June 2011 catalogue (value est. $250) The name Jacques is misspelled on the proof as 'Jaques". The quality of these proofs is incredible. I have one, also from BA Banknote (my brother used to work there) of Columbus, that I've shown previously. These are something that could certainly be collected for their own sake. |

Nice one too jamesw I agree with what you are all saying regarding these old auction catalogues, but, the postage would be prohibitve because some of them are the better auction houses and are printed on glossy paper and the weight is up there too. I am in the process of making more breathing space <G>, and some have already gone out the door for re-cycling. As you can see from my scans, they were taken from auctions in 2000! I have some that are earlier but have decided to keep the special colour plates in some of them. What I might do with the rest of them is offer local club members a chance to see if they want them but, doubt that too because other members have offered theirs with little success. Chimo Bujutsu |

Here is another modern image, though this is not a proof or essay, it is limited print that was engraved showing only the bear image. Only 2,500 of these were prepared. As you all most likely know, this is the image used from the $8.00 Grizzly issue Chimo Bujutsu |

Just received a Christmas card from my brother, who lives in Ottawa. I've mentioned him before, he used to work for the B. A. Banknote Company. Inside the card (which had an image of a stamp on it, go figure) were these two pieces of art. One is an engraved card showing the Library of Parliament in Ottawa, which we discussed on the 'libraries on stamps' thread. This card is published by the Canadian Banknote Co. and is from the same proof that Bujutsu showed at the top of this thread. The second is what appears to be a proof (the edges of the plate are quite obvious) of a bald eagle. There are no notations on it, but it looks like it could be from a certificate of some kind. I've sent him a note and hope he can shed some light on the origins. But what a nice surprise. We don't exchange gifts anymore, and sometimes he surprises me. What a guy! |

When I used to work at a print shop the stuff that was tossed out was insane. Negatives, proof runs, trial runs of artist lithos, plates ect... At the time it was just common place but now I think back I would go dumpster diving for some of the items. One thing that comes to mind is lead/tin type and images from an old manual press (not in use) There was a 75 gallon drum of the various pcs and I probably melted down 1000lbs to make lures. Now just large single letters of that old type sells for $5-20 a pc far more than I made from the lures. Be nice to have a large framed black and white of jacques, young Victoria and maybe a beaver as depicted on the early stamps. |

jamesw, those are lovely engravings.
You're lucky to have a thoughtful brother like that. |
