this was actually a manned flight. This series of stamps (3) was to commemorate Professor A. Picard's two ascents to the stratosphers

Picard! If Star Trek were true, the captain of the USS Stargazer could have been a descendant. Or was the Picard name chosen because of the professor's flight into the stratosphere?
