I recently picked up this little Oldenburg beauty for next to nothing, because of the cut margin. Otherwise it is in great condition. An odd face value, 1/30 Thaler. Scott lists it as no. 1, Michel as no. 2. Scott says three varieties exist but does not list them. Michel says four types and lists them. The images are not too clear in my Michel, but I think my stamp is type 3, due to the round hump below the "H" of Thaler and the distance from it. The Grand Duchy of Oldenburg consisted of three widely separated portions of territory — Oldenburg, Eutin and Birkenfeld in north Germany. It issued stamps from 1852 until 1867, when it used stamps of the newly formed North German Confederation.

That is a Type III, and it doesn't match any of the known forgeries. Looks like you got a good one! |

I am glad to know it appears genuine . A bit of research and the cancel appears to be Vechta, which was in Oldenburg but now part of Lower Saxony State. Any idea what the "25" is? |

That would be the day portion of the datestamp. Here's what an almost-complete Vechta box cancel looks like. |

Speaking of maps... If you collect Germany, I highly recommend this book. Typically sells for about €20. The maps are high-quality, and they cover all the typical German collecting areas. |

Jkjblue, that is not my map, it is cropped from a larger high resolution map I got from the internet a while back, probably Wikipedia.
Postmaster, I will keep my eyes open for that atlas. |
