I obtained some Turkish stamps as part of an auction recently, from what I consider a reputable dealer. Given that I already have catalogued about $390 of Scott value for an outlay of $20, I am skeptical about the following fairly valuable Turkish newspaper stamps, which add another $175 of value for the three stamps. Just wondering if anyone can confirm my identification of these stamps (maybe I made a mistake) and whether the stamps (actually, the overprints and cancellations) look like counterfeits.

The stamps are Scott #P10, #P11 and #P12, newspaper stamps of 1891, which are the regular issues of 1890 overprinted "IMPRIME" in black. The cancellations appear to be on top of the overprint, but each overprint looks somewhat different. The Scott catalog indicates that "counterfeit overprints comprise most of the copies offered for sale in the marketplace", but I have had nothing but good transactions with the dealer.

Thanks in advance...

Hi, It says there are 2 different types of these handstamps, varying slightly in size. So maybe that is why they do appear a little different. P10-P29 are found double, inverted and sideways. But maybe these are real. That dealer may not of had the time to verify them. I have yet to go thru my Turkey Stamps. Thanks for sharing.. Keith

Nice to see examples, forgeries or not,
we don't see many here.

Optimism serves well for the search, pessimism for the wallet.

"There are many forgeries of the overprint, which is often struck double, sideways etc"
Stanley Gibbons.

It may be the cynic in me, but I often study postmarks,
my collection of Turkey, a nice evenly struck quarter segment
evidenced across 1 corner happens about 1 in in 200
You have 3 out of 3
At $20 you still got a good deal.
However, I do wish you good luck.

Thanks for replying.

Rod, that's a good point about the cancellations. That raises more doubts for sure. I'll keep them (or quarantine them if you like, noting they may be forgeries) and do more research.

I'm sure the dealer was not trying to palm these off - probably didn't verify as gkc suggested. I got a very good deal on the rest and I am quite happy about that, so I have no complaints.

Couldn't agree more, and that's where philately really begins,
the research, and the difficulty.
This is, where I believe Stamp Clubs come into their own, you can take your examples along and usually someone in the club has deep experience, and you can pick their brains and knowledge.

Even if they turn out to be forgeries, they are valuable,
and used for comparison when other examples arrive.
