While adding my recent GB acquisitions from Londonbus1, I took another
look at a stamp already in my collection. Attached is a picture of the
Front and Back of a Great Britain Scott 62 (I believe). I can't tell
if someone had a torn stamp and was trying to repair and reuse, or
whether this is a paper fold error, but it is sure obvious that the
Position Indicators are completely wrong. (That C sure doesn't match
the R.)

It looks like a poorly thought-out repair to me. If someone was going to repair that stamp, they should have found an 'R' to go in the corner. The inverted 'C' has to have come from another stamp.

Tony,

Yes, I thought the same, but the cancellation seems to show that the
repair was done before it was postally used. Why would someone do
that? Just an odd piece to me.

The whole purpose of the corner letters was to prevent fraud of this nature but this one slipped past.
Nice find.

Fascinating, you can observe the box of the "C"
is well outside of the stamp frame.
The stamp was made from two stamps, a portion cut out the top stamp
and glued ontop of the corner piece.
There is no join evident in your scan.

Interesting. It seems to me, and I'm no expert, that the cancellation is generally aligned horizontally. However, the cancel parts over the "C" are aligned roughly upper left to lower right. And I can't fathom how the boxed "C" is offset to the left, unless the repairer cut out just the box from another stamp, and glued it to the stamp rather sloppily. But that doesn't jive with scan of the reverse of the stamp, which shows that sharp delineation and a large amount of doubled paper along the lower right edge.
Regards, Robert
