"75" is the numeral assigned to Birmingham. However, it is unlikely that it was a "spoon" cancellation, as I don't see any trace of an attached datestamp. The spoons, shoes, etc. came out in about 1854 and were duplex devices - with the datestamp nest to the numeral obliterator. Until then, the clerk had to hit the cover twice - once with the datestamp and once to cancel the stamp. This page has a copy of the Birmingham spoon cancellation device. It is unusual to find spoon cancellations on imperforate stamps, as they came out about the time that perforated penny reds and blues were in wider use. Chip |

Thanks for all the nice comments and cutlery corrections ! It was difficult sorting the Blues and Reds/Red-Browns into 'equal' pairs and just had to hope everyone was OK with what they got. I am not a Line Engraved expert and learned a lot during the research period before selling. I became quite attached to many of the stamps and it was sad to see them go. But reading theads like this one makes me happy in the knowledge they have gone to a good home and are appreciated [maybe more than I could appreciate them]. I still have some more items to list, including more Victorian, and will be doing so in the next couple of weeks. Thanks everyone. Londonbus1.... |

Seriously? I would recommend getting your head examined if you're unhappy with the quality and price of LB1's lots. Therefore, I propose the following offer: If you're not completely satisfied with your recent purchases from LB1's "I must be crazy" thread, contact me and I'll purchase those lots for what you paid + 10%. The only thing that prevented me from buying everything, was that it was intended to share the wealth amongst SCF members Thank you, thank you, thank you, LB1! Brian |
