Thanks Tony! That makes me think that probably most if not all of these are forged...

If the Burma Peacock was my stamp, I'd sadly consign it to the forgeries file. I don't know accurate numbers, but I'd guess 9 out of 10 Peacock overprints in circulation are fakes. These are examples of those stamps that you naturally assume to be fakes until they come with a cast-iron guarantee from an expert in the area - a bit like earlier Iran.

Good research wadek, thanks for that resource link, very useful and very interesting. I see what you mean about this being a spaced "i" and "l" variant, but unfortunately, the zoomed example (on the left in the linked doc) is from one of the values with black type, which also seem to use a different typeset. The cat value is 4000 baht ($126) for spaced "i" and "l" and 6000 ($189) for small "i". I'm afraid I have zero experience in hunting down fakes, someone else may have more experience in this area. It's a shame that several of these seem to be fakes, perhaps this one is too. I hope it isn't.

I hope so too! At least a few of these being real would be amazing but I am not getting my hopes up-

Here is an update for those that are interested. I contacted the Japanese Philatelic Society and they got back to me really quickly. All the Japanese stamps are fakes... Still trying to find out about the Hong Kong and Siam. Do you think I should start a new thread for each of those??

Shame about the Japanese stamps wadek. Might not be a good outlook for the others - perhaps that's why these stamps were set apart in the collection you bought? You could start new topics with more specific titles, by all means, or you could edit the title of this topic to include Siam and HK. To edit the title, edit the first post.
