Here are four stamps, all corresponding to Scott #356

I have not been able to verify anywhere variations on this particular stamp.

You will see in the picture below that none of the 4 stamps are violet and deep ultra, as listed in Scott. Also each stamp is a different shade, and are imperforate. Also, the backs of both pairs are gummed, never hinged.

Any ideas if these are counterfeits or proof sheets, or something else?

any input or speculation would be greatly appreciated.

These are what are referred to as Color Proofs. The stamp design is printed in different colors for folks to judge which color best suits the stamp.

thanks smauggie, I'm just curious, would these still qualify as stamps? and is their value different (more or less) than that listed in catalogue? every stamp has an interesting story, and I thank you for giving me some details on these.

Color proofs were only issued during the stamp creation process. The supply is quite limited. On the other hand, they tend to be more carefully preserved, and so are much more likely to be preserved over time than the postage stamp. In this case, the stamp itself is common. The proofs are more likely less so, and more sought after.
