Hello.

I would like to get a second opinion regarding this stamp, please. Unless I'm missing something completely, I believe this stamp is Germany Scott # 181a with omitted background.

The second question that immediately comes to mind, is the date 18.11.22 a valid date for a postally used stamp of this issue?

BTW the watermark is 126 as defined by Scott.

Thank you very much for any input.

Hi, from your scan it DOES appear that the pale rose color is omitted!!
As far as a genuine postmark, my stamp #181 also has this year date of 1922, the Michel catalog says the stamps were issued in 6/1922 so it very well maybe a genuine usage. Great find!

597596, sorry your stamp is a regular #181. It's faint, but I can still see the background pale rose in your stamp.

Danko, looks pretty good from the pic. Best way to is examine the with a magnifier under a good light. Look first at the white just inside the framelines. Then focus on the white lettering. The background lines should be visible in the lettering/numbering.

Best wishes!

k

Thank you gentlemen.

I studied my stamp thoroughly, and I'm confident that the background is omitted.

A great find indeed, especially after the fact that I found it in a kiloware box.

Now I have to deal with the pain of having this stamp certified, but it is a good pain :)

Maybe somebody can recommend a respectful expert in these area, who coincidentally lives in New England?

Again, thank you very much. This forum rocks.

Not sure if it is pale rose omitted or not, but before proceeding I would think you should find out if the cancel in genuine and certifable. Don't have a catalog here, but my guess is a unused isn't worth certifying.

I guess I used the wrong term. What I meant is to have the stamp expertized, to get a certificate of authenticity. It would be great if someone here can determine from the scan whether the postmark is genuine or not, but so far, I only have general idea about the cancel. The date looks good, the type of the cancel is typical for that time and place, unfortunately can't read the name of the town. Unless some of the experts here can notice something that will give them a concrete idea about the cancel; otherwise, it must be expertized I guess.

CV for this stamp only about $800 for VF specimen. MY stamp has condition issues, so even with the certificate it may only worth $100 to $200 at best, I assume. So, I need to do some thinking whether expertizing worth an investment.

This stamp should have two colors: carmine - the one you see on the stamp, and pale rose, which should be as a background design. Even though it very faint, you can still see this background design on the same stamp from 597596, or even better on his 2 mark stamp. Normal 10 mark stamp is Scott # 181, but on some of these stamps background design was missed due to the machine/humane error. This created 181a with omitted background. What is typical for this issue, is that unused stamps or canceled to order (CTOs), even with omitted background worth very little, but with genuine postmark Catalog value for VF stamp is about $800. Unfortunately, even if it a genuine postmark, without a Certificate of Authenticity, this stamp worth as little as CTO.
