I've never seen a closeup of that Crete stamp before...thanks for sharing. Almost any stamp benefits from a nice, big scan.

I like this stamp.

The poltics represented by the stamp are interesting.

The stamp was issued in 1907 and shows Prince George of Greece arriving in Crete in 1898 to assume the role of High Commissioner of Crete and he is seen here saluting the allied admirals who were the senior officers of the European powers (Britain, France, Italy and Russia) whose forces had recently occupied Crete and were guaranteeing Cretan autonomy (although the island was still under the nominal control of the Ottoman government).

When this stamp was issued Prince George had become rather unpopular in Crete and the occupying powers ensured that a new High Commissioner was appointed This was Mr Zaimis, a former prime minister of Greece. I guess this one drachma high value stamp was issued as a courtesy to Prince George to mark the end of his period in this role. A 25 lepta stamp showing Mr Zaimis was issued at the same time.
