I have found so many forgeries in Grandma's collection that I'm afraid
to ask. What is your opinion of this one? I read it as a Malta 14
(from Scott Catalog).

While forgeries do exist of this stamp, your stamp looks genuine to me.

You will need to start moving these stamps out of the album, as you can see the rust/foxing starting on the right side. The stamp retail value takes a huge hit. And you don't want any other premium stamps to get damaged. Depending on the exact nature of the stains, you may even have to isolate them if it turns out to be mildew.

That stamp used has a CV of $95.00 in my 2009 Scott's Catalogue.

Nice stamp and for one with a relatively high face value, it isn't too bad a cancel either.

Thanks guys. Still in album, but now in protective plastic. Lots of
other stamps have the same issue, and dealing with them as I can. Nice
to know that non-forgeries exist ...

The stamp is genuine. The cancellation is the GPO Maltese Cross handstamp. It was used on registered letters from 1905 to the 1920s.
